Google’s Panda update and product descriptions

Google > Webmaster Central > Crawling, indexing & ranking >

The Panda update has negatively affected legitimate ecommerce sites that use product descriptions from manufacturers

A clear solution for eCommerce sites effected by Panda is to use progressive content, flash or even html5 canvas to render the talking points which have been duplicated across nearly all other sites that sell the same product. These design changes can also improve sales rates as it draws the visitor to view these important elements.

Online Spending Expected To Break Records

ComScore: Holiday spending to be ‘highest on record’

According to ComScore, consumers spent $9.01 billion during the first three weeks of November, representing a 13 percent gain over the $7.95 billion spent during the same period last year.

For the months of November and December combined, ComScore is forecasting $32.4 billion in online spending. Last year, consumers spent $29.1 billion during that two-month holiday shopping period. ComScore also said that from January through October, online consumers spent $109.9 billion, representing a 9 percent gain over the $100.7 billion they spent during the same period last year.

“We are seeing online spending surpass the totals we saw in 2007 prior to the recession,” ComScore chairman Gian Fulgoni wrote in a statement, “and expect sales this holiday season to be the highest on record.”

Why are many designers ignoring online chat systems

Many businesses have somebody or some people in the office all day answering the phone, and responding to emails. They are there in the front office sitting in front of a computer. Many of the sales people have a computer in front of them, as do support people.

One thing sales people know how to do is sell product. A chat system on a business site gives the visitor a way to ask a question to the sales person. People do not like to be sold to until they cross a line – web site copy needs to reflect this and stay on the soft sale side of the line for most of their content. But when people are ready to buy soft selling does not answer their questions. A chat system can close the sale.
